Roberta came across our invitation last year to join Polarity Thinkers in Healthcare℠ as a founding member. The invitation came at a time when she was re-entering the healthcare workforce following a sabbatical. Roberta had been exposed to Polarity Thinking™ many years ago when she was a leader in a healthcare organization in the Midwest, but it had been quite a while since she had applied Polarity Thinking™. She was exploring the job market and felt engaging in the membership would be a great way to start a new leadership role in a new organization. She knew she would benefit from expert guidance and being able to bounce ideas off others along the way. She was ready to get deep into Polarity Thinking™ again because she recognized healthcare so desperately needed it.
Roberta is in an executive leadership role now and has been using Polarity Thinking™ as a framework for understanding what she and others are experiencing in the organization. She is engaging other leaders and using the principles of Polarity Thinking™ to discuss tensions in the organization and to manage opposing and conflicting points of view. Erin has grown up with the father of Polarity Thinking™, Dr. Barry Johnson, as her “pseudo-grandfather”. Barry and Erin’s dad are best friends. So, she’s been exposed to this way of thinking all her life. Erin loves adventure and joined as a founding member because she wanted to be a part of something new. She also wanted the community experience and the opportunity to dialogue and brainstorm with others in healthcare but from different professions. While Erin knew how to identify polarities and understood how polarities work, she wanted more experience applying Polarity Thinking™ and exposure to how to move from the theoretical to practical application. It was the point after she identified the polarity and the poles that she needed help with.
Erin just recently graduated with her DNP degree and during the dissertation process uncovered a crux polarity that was being experienced in the organization she was working with. This offered Erin a perfect opportunity to leverage the membership community to dialogue and brainstorm about this polarity and practice mapping it. Erin has also leveraged some of the membership activities to explore and examine personal polarities she’s experiencing as she transitions from student to professional. In addition, Erin found her hunger for examples of real-world experience with polarities was met when guest speakers shared how they have leveraged various polarities in their organizations.
